At times, my job places me in an unfamiliar environment, be that the location, setting and/or a line of work I may not have a full understanding or appreciation for. On the face of it, this might sound like a daunting proposition, but to the contrary, I feel it allows me to be more objective in my photographic approach to assignments.

Such a situation arose several weeks ago when I was commissioned to produce a bank of images for Royal Mail. The locations of the three day shoot included Warrington, Sheffield and Rotherham. Other than spending four months of my photography training course in Sheffield over 20 years ago, I had no prior knowledge of the places I was visiting. Fortunately the feeling of being a stranger in unknown territory appears to give me extra incentive when trying to produce a catalogue of interesting and appealing images.
I've always enjoyed meeting new people through my work, and I've found that postmen and women are up there with the best of them. The pleasure of shadowing a selection of posties was supplemented with a tour around the North West Superhub, making for a memorable few days. This mail processing centre operates on a huge scale using the latest scanning, sorting and tracking technology to get thousands of parcels from senders to receivers.
A further example of bettering my education and understanding of the world by simply doing my job.
