Streets Apart

As all hell was breaking loose across many towns and cities last weekend, I was in Stockton to celebrate diversity and the arts at the annual International Riverside Festival (SIRF). I've been lucky enough to attend SIRF several times over the years and it's always a pleasure to witness such a wealth of street theatre provided by companies of both British and continental origin.

Farm Yard Circus is performed in the High Street.

On the face of it, Stockton wouldn't appear to be the most obvious place to hold an arts festival. A traditional northern market town connected to the birth of the railway. However, with its attractive wide, and predominantly pedestrianised, High Street, it proves a perfect backdrop to the variety of performers who woo the crowds for the three day spectacular.

Ian Marchant performs his Culinary Capers show on the SIRF Green.

Fun on a farm, performers mimicking cats, jugglers, hairdressers, dancing grannies and a carnival parade were just some of the delights on offer at this year's celebration. Long may SIRF continue and unite people together through an appreciation of art and entertainment.

Osadia (from Spain) perform their show Whose Hair Dares! in the High Street.

Firma Kodde Productions (from The Netherlands) perform their show Roar Race, in the High Street.

Trash Cat Productions perform Street Cat Strut in the High Street.
