Clickety Six

A very interesting day of work yesterday with politics taking centre stage as I completed a shift for The Northern Echo newspaper. Next Thursday the public will have the opportunity to cast their vote for one of ten metro mayors across England, thousands of councillors and 37 police and crime commissioners.

Consequently some of the bigger names across the political spectrum have appeared in the North East to offer support to their respective parties and candidates. My day started at Darlington Railway Station where after finally finding the right location after visiting two other building sites, I followed Darlington MP Peter Gibson and Transport Secretary Mark Harper touring an area undergoing redevelopment.

Such is the nature of a newspaper shift that I had about 10 minutes on this assignment before rushing off to the next one. In the afternoon I headed to the Hitachi plant at Newton Aycliffe which is currently under the spotlight with question marks over future orders. The political figures being shown around the shop floor were Labour Party leader Keir Starmer and shadow Transport Secretary Louise Haigh.

My final political dalliance of the day came somewhat unexpectedly while covering the BUSINESSiQ Awards at Ramside Hall near Durham City. Guests were provided with a surprise thanks to a fleeting visit from Labour Party leader Keir Starmer and shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves. Quite the day, rubbing shoulders with the political elite.
