Different Ball Games

It was great to see international cricket return to the region this week and in particular, what appeared to be a full Riverside stadium at Chester-le-Street for the twenty20 match between England and New Zealand. This traditional summer game isn't for everyone, especially when faced with competition from the all-dominating football. There is much less money involved, it's played a lot less in schools and over the years many local clubs have folded through lack of cash and participation. Fortunately I enjoy the sport and it was interesting to see football and cricket come together as Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe, plus players Nick Pope, Sean Longstaff and Lewis Hall, were spotted in the Riverside stands enjoying the game with England and Durham fast bowler Mark Wood.
