As work continues to dismantle the former steelworks on Teesside, the rate of change can't fail to make an impression on me. Huge mechanical beasts rip plates of metal from the iconic structures like a dentist pulling teeth, however it is the workers on the ground that hold the biggest interest to me. Shards of sparks flying into the sky from their burners as the once industrial complex is reduced to scrap.
The Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) plant is the latest building to have been all but eliminated from existence. On a recent visit, just three huge spherical vats, which used to hold the molten iron, remained of the once 65-metre long building that closed in 2015. Unrecognisable from just a few months ago.
