I've made several trips to schools in recent weeks with A-level and GCSE result days to photograph. A less obvious visit took place at Barnard Castle School to cover the annual NORVIS music summer school. An apt setting for the gathering of performers and instrumentalists who came laden with a collection of eye-catching musical devices.
Initially founded in 1971 as The Northumbrian Recorder and Viol School, NORVIS provides specialist teaching and performing of music from the early renaissance to the late baroque period (circa 1400 to 1800s). To the unexperienced observer such as I, all kinds of weird and wonderful instruments were on display such as harpsichords, viols and lutes. Of the latter two, various models were on display, as impressive in shape and size as they were in acoustics.
With participants travelling far and wide to attend the specialist and intense week long event, the breaks provided a good opportunity to wind down and catch up with like-minded attendees. The lunch break in particular provided some nostalgia for me, queuing up to be served a school dinner and sitting on benches and long tables to eat it. Thankfully the food quality was far better than I remembered, and with a fully tummy, an empty plate was returned to the kitchen.
