On The Ball

It was a real pleasure to cover the Patrick and Frances Connolly (PFC) Trust's annual Green and Blue Ball last weekend. Hartlepool College was overflowing with smartly dressed guests, myself included with tuxedo and shiny shoes to match. The purpose of the gathering to raise thousands of pounds for the local community.

The PFC Trust was set up after the eponymous couple won the lottery in January 2019. Keen to give something back to Hartlepool, the town they call home, the charity came into being and now exists to help individuals and organisations achieve their goals.

The Green and Blue Ball provides a glamorous setting for further funds to be raised with a prize draw and auction, both of which feature some fantastic prizes. Among the treasures to be won this year was a Rolex watch, a Mulberry handbag, holidays and VIP days out. Former England and Liverpool FC legend John Barnes hosted the auction and recounted humorous anecdotes from his playing days, but sadly didn't deliver a rendition of his rap from New Order's World In Motion: the musical hit of 1990 that accompanied that year's World Cup.

Other stars from the sporting world were in attendance including Paralympic legend Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, boxing world champion Savannah Marshall, and ex England and Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips, who currently manages the Hartlepool United side.
