Pre-Photography Jitters

In addition to all of the fields of photography I regularly cover, weddings are a niche area that I tend to dip in and out of. I don't actively pursue these matrimonial occasions as I'm often busy at weekends with other commissions, but when I do get asked, I'm very happy to take up the reins for these special days.



The responsibility of covering a marriage and all the build up before and afterwards is immense. The bridal preparation stage means being welcomed into a family home of people you may not have even met before. Instantly trying to blend into the background of often tightly spaced rooms in order to produce candid imagery of those getting ready can be a challenge.



Good organisation and driving skills are needed to get to the venue of the ceremony before the bridal party, and be in position for their arrival. It's then a case of being in the right place at the right time as the service takes its course. Again my aim is to be as unobtrusive as possible aided by long lenses allowing me to take pictures from afar. Thankfully camera shutters are much quieter than they used to be which also helps my low-key approach.



The sensitive parts of the day done with, further organisational skills and a loud voice are necessary for arranging confetti throwing and an often lengthly list of family group shots. The reward being some time alone with the newly weds to capture an array of creative shots of the main protagonists of the day.



Speeches are all about reaction and emotion from a photographic perspective with an collection of amusing anecdotes hopefully being well received. Tender moments of the cake cutting and the first dance precede the guests taking to the floor and strutting their stuff.



Although formulaic in their structure, every wedding I've attended has been unique thanks to those attending, the venues chosen and the idiosyncrasies created throughout the day. A huge congratulations go to Hannah and Dylan (pictured in this post) for tying the knot, and a big thank you to them for choosing me to document their big day.
